WASHINGTON, D.C.
Parental Suite (Age-in-Place), one-Level Addition w/ ADA Compliant Features
This thoughtfully designed single-level addition is a private sanctuary, seamlessly blending independence with intimate connection to the main home. Designed with aging-in-place principles, the suite features its own private entrance, allowing for a sense of autonomy, while a discreet, accessible interior doorway connects to the main house when desired.
Vaulted ceilings and recessed lighting create an airy, inviting atmosphere, complemented by a statement chandelier and ceiling fan for both elegance and comfort.
The expansive layout includes a serene sitting area, ideal for morning coffee or quiet reflection, and a spacious walk-in closet for effortless organization.
The en suite bathroom is fully ADA-compliant, marrying functionality with refined design, ensuring ease of movement without compromising style. Every detail—from the flow of natural light to the carefully considered finishes—has been curated to provide a mother with a space that feels truly her own: luxurious, accessible, and deeply connected to the rhythms of family life.
Our clients, a devoted daughter and her 83-year-old mother, partnered with us to bring this vision to life. Together, we designed a simple yet elegant space, weaving in the mother’s favorite color and her personal selections throughout. The result is a home that feels both deeply personal and timeless—an oasis where independence and family connection coexist beautifully.
Single-Level Addition, Mother’s Suite
about THE PROject
We partnered with the homeowner on this project. The goal was to open the living space and sell at premium. It had been rented to tenants for 5yrs and the most recent tenant had 7 cats who never quite regularly made it to the kitty litter box. Replacing the hardwood floors was an obvious requirement.
The kitchen was a more-than-cozy 35sqft. We removed the 2 walls that surrounded it and expanded the kitchen into the small dining area to make it an eat-in kitchen with lots of recessed lighting and glimmering pendant lights. Removing one of the French doors allowed for us to build a custom pantry with cabinetry which surrounded the stainless steel refrigerator and delivered extra space for a 2nd breakfast bar area.
Since this town home offered a spacious backyard, we not only built a deck but we added an enclosed cabana for private year-round entertainment or a private retreat for a serene escape.
